Privacy policy

Status: this is a plain-language description of how the site is built to work. It has not had legal review and should not be treated as legal advice or a guarantee of compliance with any law. It must be reviewed, and updated to the services actually switched on, before advertising is enabled or the site is promoted to a wider audience.

What the site is

TartanFoundry is a static site. Pages are prepared in advance and served as files. There are no user accounts, no comments, no forms that store your input on our side and no database of visitors.

What we collect by default

We do not run advertising scripts and we do not set cookies of our own. The site loads Google Analytics 4, which sets cookies only if you accept them, as described under Analytics below. Whatever host serves the site will see ordinary request data, such as your IP address, the page requested and your browser type, in its server logs. Which host that is and how long logs are kept is set by that provider and should be stated here once the host is fixed.

The search box and the Tartan Finder run in your browser against data shipped with the page. What you type is not sent to us.

Analytics

The site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are useful. It loads with all storage denied by default (Google Consent Mode), and a banner asks whether you accept analytics cookies. If you reject, or have not chosen, no analytics or advertising cookies are set and Google receives only cookieless pings, which can include your IP address, the page address and your browser type. If you accept, Google Analytics sets its own cookies to recognise a returning browser and measure visits. Your choice is kept in your browser's local storage on this site, not in a cookie, and you can change it at any time with the Analytics settings link in the footer. Advertising and ad personalisation storage stay denied either way.

Advertising

Advertising is off. No ad scripts load and no ad space is shown. Should advertising be enabled, third-party vendors including Google may use cookies to serve ads, and a Google-certified consent management platform will be added first where the law requires consent. This policy will then list the vendors and explain how to opt out.

Email

If you write to hello@tartanorigin.com, we receive your address and message and use them only to reply and to handle the correction. We do not add you to a mailing list.

Links to other sites

Pages link to registries, museums and other sites. They have their own privacy practices, which we do not control.

Your rights and questions

Rights over personal data vary by country. Because the site collects little by default, there is usually little to access or delete, but you can ask at the contact address. Changes to this policy will be shown on this page.
